Pakistan Institute of Legislative Development and Transparency (PILDAT)

Pakistan had democratically elected Governments in less than half the time since independence in 1947. Since 2008, when democracy was recently restored, there has been progress in democratic structures, electoral processes, the restoration of independence of the judiciary and strengthening free media, but it is still difficult for ordinary citizens to influence in decision making, and understanding of democracy is not filtered through the entire society. 

PILDAT is a civil society organization founded by a number of repatriated Pakistanis in 2001. The Organization plays an active role in engaging with Government, Politicians and the Election Commission in order to strengthen democracy. The Danida funded project is a two year program that aims to strengthen PILDATs work in three areas: 

• General monitoring of democracy in Pakistan with the publication of "State of  democracy   Report" based on a method developed by the International Institute of Democracy and Electoral Assistance    (I-IDEA) 
• Monitoring the Election Commission's implementation of electoral reforms, including recommendations by the EU Election Observation Mission and PILDAT themselves; 
• National Youth Parliament which aims to engage the Pakistani youth in a positive development through strengthening democratic values ​​and the basis for resolving conflicts. Danida is supporting    the fourth and fifth batch of the Youth Parliament, each of which runs over a year when young    people participate in a series of meetings based on key activities in Parliament.
